Evaluation Question 4 How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Technology has played a large part in the process of making a Music Video, Digipack and Music Magazine because of all the different types of technology we used.

The first peace of technology that I used in this process was blogger, blogger is an a website where you can post images, text, video and various other files almost like a journal, allowing me to post all my research, feedback, ideas, products etc. and present it all in a neat and tidy form without it all getting lost. Blogger is also a way for people to easily access and review my work and tell me if I need any improvements. This brings me onto how we used technology to help with our target market research, we used a website called survey monkey that allows you to create an online survey and post it on the internet for people to find and fill in so you can have feedback on whatever questions you want answered, this helped us to find out what our target market wanted in the music video and which ideas they liked the best. We made a word document with the results of the survey on so that we could post them on our blog; we have used Microsoft Word for many different things like this but mostly for the survey we conducted. We were able to place the Microsoft Word Documents on our blog by using a website called scribed which allows you to place the document on their website and then they will give you an embed code that you can put on blogger so you can view the documents from there, we did this because blogger doesn’t support graphs and charts that are on the word document.

We used Google to research images and information and on the Internet we also used Slide Share that gave us information on ‘Andrew Goodwin’ and his theory’s.

We then created an Animoto that is a presentation software on the internet to present our ideas to our peers and gather their thoughts for our music vide and if they could give us any more ideas that we haven’t thought of.

After we got feedback on the style and genre we were able to style our artist Rosa-Leigh around the feedback and we also created a Twitter page for her like a real artist would have to address their audience and let them know of upcoming events to advertise themselves and also give some background information on the artist.

Once we had learnt all the information from the surveys we also started trying to find a song that we could use for our music video that suited the genre and style that didn’t have a music video already or one that had a music video and could be improved or changed we did this by using iTunes that allowed us to listen too a wide variety of music and music videos to pick the best song to suit our artist also. iTunes enabled us to look at the time of the song also which was necessary because we needed at least a 3:00 minuet song for our music video, we eventually found our song ‘Afternoon’ by ‘Youth Lagoon’ in the Alternative section which was the genre our music video is based around.

After we decided that that was the song we wanted we started drawing up our favorite ideas and the ideas that the surveys had told us that were best and most liked on post-it notes so we could rearrange them if we needed, we then took pictures of them all and placed them on Final Cut Pro to start creating our Animatic to see what our music video will turn out like. We liked what the animatic showed us so then we decided what locations we wanted to shoot the shots at were. To do this we went around taking pictures of locations that we liked and were possible to use and placed them on flicker and embedded the flicker photos onto our blog.

Then we decided on the equipment that we were going to be using and this was my Nikon D3100 camera that shoots in HD giving us the best quality for our video, with this there was also the tripod to keep the camera steady with the still shots. We also used Holly’s Samsung ES71 to create the vintage shots in the video that were lower quality to create that effect the other lower quality camera we used was the iPhone 5 that allowed us to create the mirrored and kaleidoscope effects for the video that we had discussed and drawn on the animatic. The other paces of equipment we would be using were and Apple Macbook Pro and an iMac to edit the footage on Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Pro would help with the editing and the bubble effects that we have used in our video.

We then uploaded the video to YouTube and embedded it onto our blog so that people could review the video and tell us if anything needed improving or re-shooting.

After we had made our music video we moved onto making a Digipack and a Magazine Advert for our artist to do this we used Photoshop to help us edit the images, text etc. in order to create a Digipack and Magazine Advert that fit the style and genre of our music video. Photoshop is a professional program and with using it you know that you will end up with a professional looking product that you envisioned.

Draft Evaluation Question 3 What have you learned from your audience feedback?

The feedback we got through this project was important to make sure we got every aspect of the music video, digipack and magazine advert right as we possible could. We also did lots of research to make sure we knew what audience we were making the music video for, this involved looking on the ‘UK Tribes’ website which splits up the social groups and we were able to identify which group our target audience belonged too so we could ask the right questions and acknowledge the answers from the right people and what they thought. After we had researched the social groups we made a survey on survey monkey that asked our target market group about what they would like to see in the music video such as if they like nature, bubbles, cars, summer clothes, sunsine/summer, locations etc. in order to find out what would be best for us to put in the music video to pleas them as our audience, we also wanted to find out what age group was involved with this type of genre which was teenagers and that gave us lots of freedom with the music video because we could do creative things as they have a wider imagination and are susceptible to different ideas. We also put our mood board on the survey too so they were able to visually see some of the clothing that we were suggesting to use.
From this survey and showing them the mood board we got lots of positive and informative feedback allowing us to continue with our video and we were able to start making a music video that pleased our target audience and suited the genre we wanted.

Once we had got a music video that we were happy with we asked our peer, friends and people within the target market what they liked and disliked about the video, we did this by making a short survey on this and we also asked questions like what they thought of Rosa-Leigh as an artist and if she suited the genre and could anything be changed or improved. We mostly got positive feedback from them with few changes and they all seemed to like different aspects of the video and were happy to say that not much needed changing and they liked the artist in the video and the song we had chosen for the genre. The only problems that we had were some people didn’t like some of the effects we used such as the kaleidoscope and the mirrored effect but a greater majority of people liked than disliked the effects so we decided to keep them in the video. We changes some of the aspects of the video that people didn’t like such as the amount of costume changes and one location which was the white room/attic that we shot in and instead they would prefer the whole video to be outdoors, summery and nature like. We also listened to feedback from our teacher Mr. Ford allowing us to improve the video more.

The feedback we got from Mr. Ford was different from our peers because he was looking at other parts in the video like the mes en scene and how it effected the look of our artist, one of the mes en scene comments was that he didn’t like the fences in some of the shots because they were too dark and drew your attention away from the artist and the brightness of the shot and he suggested to have nature in the background instead. We went away and re-filmed the shots thinking more about the mes en scene and other parts of the video that could be changed to make the video look more professional to the target audience, after we made the changes the music video had improved so much and we were happy with the final outcome of the video and our target audience was pleased with the changes too making us believe that we had accomplished a music video that suits the style and the genre.

Draft Evaluation Question 2 How Effective is the Combination of Your Main Product and Ancillary Texts?

I wanted to make the digipack and the magazine advert link with the music video. I did this by keeping the nature and natural effect throughout the digipack and the magazine advert, I wanted to keep the link in many other ways too such as the record company logo ‘Island records’ is linked/placed on digipack and the magazine advert so that the artist can be associated with the company who is known to sign large and successful artists or artists that have great talent and are about to become accomplished and well known in the music industry, and the artists name on the front cover so they are recognizable as well as Rosa-Leigh’s face on the covers.

I kept the nature themed look through the magazine advert and the digipack by adding an image of the location we framed one of our shots at to the back of the digipack to keep the theme and the style we wanted for our artist. I continued the image of the location onto the magazine advert allowing people to reckognise and make a link between the digipack, magazine advert and the music video.

The name of the song ‘Afternoon’ was another aspect that I wanted to keep the same thought all three products so people can recognize the song and the artist after they see the name; this is also the type of recognisation that I would like when they see Rosa-Leigh’s face on the front of the digipack and the magazine advert.

The artist style is also kept the same thought the different media, Magazine Advert, Digipack and Music Video, this is so that she is easily recognizable to the target market and also so that she suits the style of the genre.

Draft Evaluation Question 1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I researched existing media product before I planned my music video, magazine advert and digipack, when I was researching these I concentrated on the conventions they were using or trying to develop. After doing all the research I selected the most interesting concepts and conventions that fit the genre of my music video and were easily applicable to the genre and style.

The research involved with planning my digipack was looking at existing products from a similar genre but also introducing ideas from different styles of genres too, I looked at various artists from female artists to male artists and how they were styled on the digipack. I looked at how they were styled because I wanted to have the artist Rosa-Leigh on the front of my digipack and also inside the digipack and they needed to look like they were part of the genre, when doing this it meant I researched lots of female artist album covers that had the artist presented and styled on the front cover such as ‘Liona Lewis’ ‘Spirit’, Rihanna ‘Loud’, ‘Adele’ ‘21’ and ‘Foxes’ ‘Echo’. I decided that I wanted to do a four-panel digipack because it looks neat and simple and allowed my audience to concentrate on the detail involved on the digipack instead of the having a 6 or 8 panel digipack that had lots of images and writing so they would concentrate less on other elements of the digipack. I was looking at and researching some of the albums with nature and natural images on them and I wanted to incorporate that into my digipack because it looked good with the artist and the style and the genre of the digipack also because we incorporated nature into our music video which worked really well with our artist Roas-Leigh.

I didn’t do anything to challenge the conventions on my digipack because I used frequently used different forms of well know conventions such as the name of the artist and the title of the album on the front cover and on the back cover I didn’t challenge the conventions ether because I placed the bar code in the most common spot on an album or digipack I also added the song titles, Record Companies Logo and the Copyright infringement in all the places the would normally be on a CD or digipack if you were to pick one up and look on the front and back.
On the inside of the digipack I wrote the song titles and who helped produce them on the far left panel behind the CD so its noticeable when taken out of the case, this isn’t used very much when creating digipacks but is used enough not to chalange conventions because I haven’t changed or done anything different.
The spine also dosent challenge any conventions because its got the album name, artists name, record companies logo and the product code down the side all in their “normal” places or where you would normally find them if you picked one up.

For my magazine advert I researched existing magazine adverts for different types of artists for the genre that or music video is based on to see how it needs to look and feel and what style the artist needs to be.
My magazine advert challenges some conventions because normal magazine adverts have the artist on the front or they will have the album cover on the front
of the magazine wheres my magazine has part of the album blurred in the background and then the album cover on the front in-between the writing so its still got the nature effect but its also got the artist on the front cover so they can tell who the artist is and also recognize the album. I stuck to some conventions such as the record companies logo and the sponsor also I added the artist name when the album is released and on platforms such as CD, Vinyl and download, the artists website is also on the bottom of the magazine advert. The advert is also all in black and whit which matches the album/digipack where’s other adverts use bright colours or the bands colours so it stands out in a magazine, but it think black and white will stand out more in a colour magazine than a colored magazine advert would in a colored magazine because its different and unconventional.

We had to do a lot of research for our music video so that we could match the style and genre and please the target audience. For the research we looked at existing music videos and made a mind map on all the different aspects of each video such as shots, angles, locations, style and effects etc., We did this so that we could match all the best ideas to the style and genre. Some of the inspiration for the music video came from ‘Givers’ ‘Noche Nada (A lot From Me)’, ‘Lana Del Rey’ ‘Summer Time Sadness”, ‘Daughter’ ‘Youth’ and many more.
Whilst researching we also used surveymonkey which is an internet based website where you can create a survey and post it online for people to find and fill out allowing us to acknowledge what our target market liked and didn’t like and what they thought would work well in the music video.

The style of our artist came from many different places such as existing artists like ‘Lana Del Ray’, ‘Daughter’, ‘HAIM’ etc. but we also wanted a summer styled artist to fit in with the nature that surrounds her in all the shots we framed. We changed her clothes in different shots because of a music video we saw by (insert artist and song here), this was a good idea because nothing was the same and it kept people interested in the video. This challenged some conventions because normally artists are wearing the same clothes through the video.
